Specific requirements include:

    Non flammability test: Toy materials should have certain non flammability properties to prevent the spread of fire. Specifically, a vertical combustion test is used to evaluate the non flammability of toy materials by measuring their flame height and flame duration.

    Burning speed and time limits: The standard imposes restrictions on the burning speed and time of certain materials, which means that under specific conditions of testing, the burning speed and time of the material should comply with the limits specified in the standard. Using a horizontal combustion test, the combustion rate of toy materials is evaluated by measuring the propagation rate and combustion area of flames on the material.

    Combustion performance testing of elastic materials: A combination of vertical and horizontal combustion tests is used to evaluate the self extinguishing performance of elastic materials.

    Combustible material testing: Different testing methods are used to evaluate the combustion performance of toy materials based on their characteristics and uses.

The EN 71-2standard only focuses on the flame retardancy of toy materials and does not address other physical or chemical properties of toys. This standard ensures the safety of children when using toys by specifying the burning speed and time limits of toy materials in contact with a fire source, as well as requiring clear labeling and warnings.
